The University Pioneers and the Bloomington Central Catholic Saints have been city rivals for years. On Friday night lightning forced both sides to go home with not even a light on the scoreboard being lit. The came back on Saturday with the Pioneers putting 18 points on the board in the first half. Central Catholic was the only scorers the 2nd half, but only managed 13. UHS 18, CCHS 13.
Later on Saturday, the Redbirds of Illinois State welcomed a new non-confernce opponent in the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State. The Redbirds were not going to lose their first home game, but no one expected a shut out 62-0. Tre Roberson won out over veteran Blake Winkler for the Quarterback start.
The Illinois men’s basketball program is facing an early setback this offseason with the news that veteran guard-forward Ty Rodgers will be out indefinitely due to a knee injury sustained during a workout session. The injury, which requires surgery, is expected to keep him sidelined for a significant portion of the upcoming season, if not all of it. Rodgers’ absence goes far beyond stats. A staple of the Illini rotation, he has been a consistent and hardworking presence on the court since his freshman year. In his second season, Rodgers started every game, bringing a gritty, physical edge to the team. He averaged over six points, grabbed more than five rebounds per game, and added a couple of assists each night. What made Rodgers so valuable was his ability to contribute in ways that didn’t always show up in the box score—defensive intensity, second-chance rebounds, and his commitment to doing the little things right. The local football season kicked off today with the Illinois State Redbird Red-White scrimmage. A healthy combination of fans and students attended the event and the preliminary activities which included the annual student promo photo on the field in Hancock Stadium with the Big Red Marching Machine, cheerleaders, flag corp, and Redline Dancers forming ISU all wearing red shirts. High School football will follow in 13 days with the first Friday Lights games. Get out this fall, support your local teams and see some of the great talent that passes through our communities! I'm a little late with this post so by now all friends of Ironman football know that the Normal Community High School Ironmen football team beat the Peoria High School Lions in the last game of the season to take sole possession of the Big 12 Conference championship title. The NCHS athletics team finishes the regular season 8-1 , the Lions fell to 7-2.
