Galena and the Mississippi Palisades

My wife and I got away for a short few days and went to Galena. We'd both been either near or through the area before but hadn't stayed long. My most vivid memory was a day trip with my parents about 40 years ago to the Palisades and an over-night with my new bride about 28 years ago in nearby Dubuque Iowa.

Galena is of course the home town of our 18th president, Ulysses S. Grant. His home was not open the day we were there as it is closed on Monday and Tuesday of each week. We were able to walk around the grounds a bit and grab a few photos. Main Street and the riverfront area (both sides) have attractions. The old railroad terminal is down the hill from Grant's home on the south side as is Grant Park. Main Street - full of lots of small shops, restaurants, and Bed and Breakfasts are on the north side. There are levies and flood gates to protect the northside from flooding as the Galena River can grow quite large during melt-off and storm season.

We stayed at the Stoney Creek Inn, on the north edge of town along route 20. A very nice place to stay. The warmest hotel I've ever been in. We ran the AC everynight even though it was in the low 40's outside and I don't remember turning on the heat. We did run the fire place one morning. The decor is a wonderfun mix of rustic cabin and golf theme. Our only complaint was they just wiped the dishes we used (we had a suite with a kitchenette) instead of washing them or replacing them with fresh. Still, I'd rate this place a 4 out of 5. Off season and an AARP rate got us the room for about $150 a night. During the "season" it runs just over $300!

The Mississippi Palisades State Park is just north of Savannah. Maybe 30 miles south of Galena. It has several vistas overlooking the Mississippi River and Buffalo Lake as well as several walking trails.

  1. Thanks for providing the great feedback and information about your most recent trip to Galena and Jo Daviess County. Definitely a great place to getaway to, especially for those right here within our state. We hope you can make another trip in the future (hopefully sooner next time!) Locally seen talent to Quarterback in NFL SuperBowl

On September 15th, 2012 Jimmy Garoppolo visited Hancock Stadium at Illinois State University as the starting quarterback for the Eastern Illinois Panthers.  Who knew that 8 years later he would become one of 2 starting quarterbacks in the NFL's SuperBowl.  Jimmy of course is the 2nd starting Quarterback from Eastern to do well.  Ten Years before, another named Tony Romo completed his senior year at Eastern.  Tony went on to an NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. Freelance photographer Alan Look was fortunate to have captured both players in action.  The image of Tony Romo was taken at Eastern during the Homecoming game in 2002 against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels.  The image has been used by national media and in several books.  The images of Jimmy Garoppolo were both used by Upper Deck as trading cards for his rookie season.

Is Rob Judson next?

Depending on which local news report you read or hear, Rob Judson  is destined to be Illinois State Redbirds next Basketball Coach.  People high in the ISU Athletics Office at last account have stated that no decision has been made. Rob is not an unfamiliar face amongst Illinoisans.  He was an assistant at Illinois and Head Coach at Northern Illinois (74 - 101) before becoming one of Tim Jankovich's assistants at Illinois State 5 years ago. Rob was instrumental in building the current Redbirds squad which returns all 5 starters next season and just may be the logical glue to hold the team together for a run at the Missouri Valley Title next season. Be sure to stop by Alan Look Photography for more Photos of the Redbirds and the Coaches.

Redbird Classic - a real winner!

Illinois State University Redbird Women's Volleyball hosted a 4 team volleyball this past weekend.  Participating visiting teams were #7 ranked Marquette Golden Eagles, #7 ranked University or Illinois Fighting Illini and the Knights from the University of Central Florida.  Events kicked off on Friday evening with the Knights and Golden Eagles followed by ISU v the Illini.  Both those matches went 4 sets with Golden Eagles defeating the Knights and ISU upsetting the Illini! On Saturday UCF took on the Illini in a morning match.  The Illini fell once again moving their record in the tournament to 0-2 and setting UCF's record to 1-1.  The evening matchups included a 5:30 match between UCF and Illinois State and the nightcap was Marquette and the Illini.  Both matches went 5 sets, both thrillers with ISU taking the win over UCF and the Illini besting Marquette. Sunday afternoon, the final match between Marquette and Illinois State was nothing short of epic...
