Wheaton Thunder rumbled into Bloomington Illinois on Saturday September 12th ranked at #12 in D3 football schools. They never rumbled much the first half of the game, but came out in the 2nd half with a long kickoff return that left them just short of the goal and scored on the next play. Illinois Wesleyan Titans got the ball back only to give it up on a fumble due to a pretty hard hit and the Thunder rumbled back into the end zone. That was the last of the rumbles from the Thunder as the Titans muscled their way back up to their feet to push them out of Tucci Stadium. Final score put the Titans on top. The win was a good one for IWU and an even better one for Coach Norm Eash. The win made Coach Eash the winningest football coach in the history of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
Lots of local talent on the IWU basketball teams this season. I know I'm going to miss someone - apologies in advance. Molly McGraw, Rebekah Ehresman, A couple of Seibrings - Trevor and Spencer, Brady Rose and Jaylen Beasley... Maybe I did get them all. If you enjoyed seeing them play high school ball, check out the IWU schedules and pay a visit to Shirk to see them play some college hoops! Be sure to check out the Normalite Newspapers and Best Look Magazine for more coverage and images by the Best Look in Sports Photography in Bloomington Normal.
A tight ground attack from both teams highlighted the Homecoming football game at Illinois Wesleyan University as the Titans hosted the Vikings of Augustana. The Vikings walked off with a 7-2 victory. Donovan Laible conducted operations for the first time as a starter for the Titans.
After taking the CCIW outright with a record of 23-3 in the regular season, the Titans fell flat in the championship game against the Thunder of Wheaton College. Returning to Shirk Center for Wheaton was Nate Haynes who has played there several times during his high school career at Normal Community.
The bucket just seemed to close every time the ball hit the rim or glass when the Titans put up the ball hitting only 23 of 47 shots from the floor and only 15 of 27 free throws. The Thunder faired better, opening up the hoop for 25 of 45 from the floor and 30 of 33 from the free pass line.
Dylan Overstreet led the Titans with 15 points, Tyler Peter for the Thunder with 29. NCHS product Nate Haynes finished with 16 points and 6 rebounds.
If you aren't from near here or been around very long, Normal Illinois has it's very own football Bowl game. It's held every season when Normal Community Ironmen play the Normal Community West Wildcats. The game travels each year to the school that didn't have it the year before. It's the one game that can really fill the stands. Seems all the students and a good number of other followers of each team arrive to see who will take home the chili!
This weekend was also the Intercity Volleyball tournament held at Normal West. Central Catholic and Normal West share the title this year. It's 3/4's of a day of volleyball and usually in September. Put it on you calendar for next year.
Football opened for the season in Tucci Stadium on Wilder Field for the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. The trumped the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College. Wilder Field is one of the oldest stadiums in the NCAA. It's been upgraded thanks to Mr. Tucci and sports multi-colored turf. It's always a good time, but this season locals Tate Musselman of Normal Community fame and T J Stinde of Lexington are making their mark. Get out and have a look see!
