The Wichita State Shockers showed up at Redbird Arena on January 22 with an undefeated season. They left with it still intact. The Redbirds scored the first points of the game and kept it a back and forth game through the first half. Starting the 2nd half, the Redbirds had a 3 point lead. The Shockers however picked up their game, leading by as much as 18 points. The Redbirds stormed back with less than 8 minutes left to cut the margin to 9. The effort fell once more as the Shockers led by 15, 70-55 at the buzzer.
The weather this spring has bottled us up a little. Alan Look Photography has been able to make a few events. And there is other news to report as well.
The Illinois State University Baseball Redbirds took the Valley season, but dropped the final MVC tournament game to the Wichita State Shockers leaving them with 2nd place. Four Illinois State players were later drafted by MLB teams. Alan Look Photography's ISU - MLB Draft gallery is here. The four players are Chris Razo, Chad Hinshaw, Brett Kay and Eric Aguilera.
Very recently analysts have been opening up about the upcoming NBA Draft. Not left out is Illinois State Basketball Redbirds Jackie Carmichael. Comcast Sports analysts have Jackie pegged as an early to mid 2nd round pick. Check out Alan Look Photographys gallery of Jackie Carmichael images.
Wichita State seems to be some sort of a nemesis for Illinois State. Twice this year being the spoiler.
The Baseball Redbirds completed the regular season with the most wins, but lost 5-2 on a miserable cold and rainy late May evening at Duffy Bass Field, walking away with 2nd in the Missouri Valley Tournament. Still an awesome season by any reasoning.
Well, February is half over and Basketball is starting to get to the playoffs. Only one Illinois State Redbird home game left in the regular season. The IHSA 1a-2a girls finals are this weekend. After that, it will be March and the rest of the IHSA playoffs and the conference championships for both the men and women at ISU and IWU. IWU by the way, has nationally ranked teams again this season. Kudos to the University for support and maintaining that level of excellance!
The local papers are reporting today that Dana Ford will leave Wichita State and return to Illinois State. The article states that the Shockers have confirmed that Dana is no longer a coach on their staff and that sources at Illinois State confirm he has been offered a position on Dan Mueller's staff but that HR processes have not been completed.
Seems like all the hoopla this season has surrounded the McDermotts (Greg and Doug). Even Sports Illustrated had a multipage/mulitphoto spread on them and the 'Jays from Creighton. Still, I look at the leaderboard on the MVC site and see the Wichita Shockers are 2 games ahead of them.
The Shockers beat the Illinois State Redbirds on Doug Collins Court last night by thirteen. So, the MVC has a first, a second, a pair in third and a four way tie for fourth. Should be a fun dance in St. Louis this year!
