Wheaton Thunder rumbled into Bloomington Illinois on Saturday September 12th ranked at #12 in D3 football schools. They never rumbled much the first half of the game, but came out in the 2nd half with a long kickoff return that left them just short of the goal and scored on the next play. Illinois Wesleyan Titans got the ball back only to give it up on a fumble due to a pretty hard hit and the Thunder rumbled back into the end zone. That was the last of the rumbles from the Thunder as the Titans muscled their way back up to their feet to push them out of Tucci Stadium. Final score put the Titans on top. The win was a good one for IWU and an even better one for Coach Norm Eash. The win made Coach Eash the winningest football coach in the history of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
The Illinois Wesleyan Lady Titans started 4 local ladies against the Titans. On the floor at the tip off were Seniors Rebekah Ehresman (EP-G), Molly McGraw (CCHS), Junior Maddie Merritt (TVHS), Sophomore Sydney Shanks (CCHS) with the 5th starter a Junior from Nokomis, Ashley Schneider.
The game progressed with both teams taking scoring runs and exchanging the lead. Close to midway through the 3rd quarter, the score was tied at 61. The Titans made the adjustments and ended the competition on top 88 to 81.
The Titans had 4 players in double figures. Rebekah Ehresman dropped in 16 to lead the Titans with Maddie Merritt and Kendall Sosa both adding 15. Raven Hughes rounded out those in double digits with 12. Hannah Frazier led the Thunder with 25 points and Maggie Dansdill with 19. The only other Thunder player in double digits was Jennifer Berg with 13.

On Tuesday September 22, the Vikings from Augustana pried a seesaw volleyball match from the Titans. The match went 5 sets. The 4th set went to a two point overrun in order for the Vikings to take it. They also got the best in the 1st and last sets. The Titans took the 2nd and 3rd sets, both by the score of 25-21. In a very lopsided scoring game, the Titan football team from Illinois Wesleyan defeated the Storm from Simpson College of Iowa. It was a non-conference game for the schools.

It is a first rate memorial and a solemn place to pay your respects to those who have made the freedom we experience possible. Our cover and a story are dedicated to it. Take a peek, this one is all funded by donations...

Spring was certainly in the air. A special event had the Shirk Center parking lot full. Women's soccer was holding in intrasquad practice game. The baseball team, softball team both held double headers and the men's lacrosse team was beating up on an opponent!
Normally (no pun intended) natives and transplants alike in Bloomington Normal think that not much interesting at all happens here. I'm in that group some of the time, but truth is I'm usually just not looking hard enough. When I heard that IWU product John Worley made the top 20 on the NFL draft prospect list for linebackers I decided it was time to check out the whole list. I usually do it every year, but had just been putting it off. I was surprised when I found what seemed like a pretty long list. Sifting through the list by university name of games I covered, I found only one or two of them that didn't have a name on the list. I think the most was 9.
So, who played in Bloomington - Normal that may get drafted? I didn't keep the whole list, but you can see the 21 that I have images of in the slideshow below.
Illinois Wesleyan Titans hosted a portion of the 1st round of the NCAA D3 Basketball Tournament. The action took place at IWU Field in Bloomington, starting on Friday May 9th and ending on Sunday May 11th. Anderson, Fontbonne, and Lake Forest were the other competitors in this part of the bracket. IWU beat Lake Forest 5-1 on Friday, shutout Anderson 14-0 in six innings on Saturday and repeated against Lake Forest again on Sunday beating them for the 2nd time 3-2 in a come from behind situation. Grabbing Tournament honors for the Titans were Hannah Bowen (Most Outstanding Player), Sara Rogers, Jenna Noland, Molly McCready, Kyley McKeown.

NCAA Men's D3 Championship slimmed down to 8 teams after action on Friday evening. At Illinois Wesleyan, the Dickinson Red Devils trumped the Wheaton Thunder and shortly after the host Titans of Illinois Wesleyan thumped the Knights of Calvin. The Titans and Red Devils meet on Saturday night at Shirk Center in Bloomington.
The Green Knights of St Norberts jumped out to a small lead, but never led by more than 4 points till Jordan Nelson hit a 2 point jumper to tie the game with 14:12 showing ont the 1st half clock. That was as close as the game got the rest of the way to the final buzzer. The next score was a three pointer by Tital Michael Mayberger. The Titans never relinquished the lead taking the game 84-68 at the end of play. The Titans will continue to the Sweet Sixteen in a game they will host at Shirk Center on Friday March 14th at 7:30 pm against the Calvin Knights.
After taking the CCIW outright with a record of 23-3 in the regular season, the Titans fell flat in the championship game against the Thunder of Wheaton College. Returning to Shirk Center for Wheaton was Nate Haynes who has played there several times during his high school career at Normal Community.
The bucket just seemed to close every time the ball hit the rim or glass when the Titans put up the ball hitting only 23 of 47 shots from the floor and only 15 of 27 free throws. The Thunder faired better, opening up the hoop for 25 of 45 from the floor and 30 of 33 from the free pass line.
Dylan Overstreet led the Titans with 15 points, Tyler Peter for the Thunder with 29. NCHS product Nate Haynes finished with 16 points and 6 rebounds.
There were more exciting games in Bloomington - Normal this weekend than one sports shooter could handle. Friday night started it off with games at both U High and Bloomington. With the Bloomington Raiders hosting the Normal West Wildcats, it was a pick to watch the intercity rivals. Bloomington came out on top this round.
On Saturday, it was the annual Pink Games at Illinois Wesleyan as both the Men's and Women's teams hosted the Elmhurst Bluejays. Both genders of the Titans sported some Pink and proceeds from a raffle and other fan oriented events went to the fight on breast cancer. The Titans came out winners as well as they bested the Bluejays in both games.
Shelby Jackson of IWU led the court with 23 points in a Titan victory over the Millikin Big Blue on Wednesday January 15th, 2014 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington. It was th3 fourth straight CCIW win for the Titans, improving their record to 4-0 in the conference and 10-5 overall tying them with Carthage for the lead in the CCIW.
Millikin fell to 0-4 in the conference and 6-9 overall
If you aren't from near here or been around very long, Normal Illinois has it's very own football Bowl game. It's held every season when Normal Community Ironmen play the Normal Community West Wildcats. The game travels each year to the school that didn't have it the year before. It's the one game that can really fill the stands. Seems all the students and a good number of other followers of each team arrive to see who will take home the chili!
This weekend was also the Intercity Volleyball tournament held at Normal West. Central Catholic and Normal West share the title this year. It's 3/4's of a day of volleyball and usually in September. Put it on you calendar for next year.
Football opened for the season in Tucci Stadium on Wilder Field for the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. The trumped the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College. Wilder Field is one of the oldest stadiums in the NCAA. It's been upgraded thanks to Mr. Tucci and sports multi-colored turf. It's always a good time, but this season locals Tate Musselman of Normal Community fame and T J Stinde of Lexington are making their mark. Get out and have a look see!
Some weeks just don't seem to have enough days and the days, not enough hours.
It's the 4th week of football season. On the high school side, Normal Community West remains undefeated as does University High. The University High v Prairie Central Hawks was pretty much a blow out. I can't remember ever seeing a score of 57-6 at the half mark. It's too bad for the Hawks, a couple less misqueues would have cut about 14 points off that figure. It's just a matter of polish. For the Pioneers, it's take care of the second half of the season and the results are limitless.
On the 21st of September, the Redbirds finally opened at home in the renovated Hancock Stadium. Even if you don't plan on attending a game there, drive by and take a look at the complex. It really compliments that campus and town. My favorite view and I need to stop there and grab a picture is from the parking lot by the renovated Duffy Bass baseball field.
The Barker Classic was the last couple of days at the Shirk Center at Illinois Wesleyan. Volleyball is a fun sport to watch and a pretty tough one to photograph. I haven't looked at the results, but it's good to see the Barker Classic remain as an attraction here in the cities.
The weather this spring has bottled us up a little. Alan Look Photography has been able to make a few events. And there is other news to report as well.
The Illinois State University Baseball Redbirds took the Valley season, but dropped the final MVC tournament game to the Wichita State Shockers leaving them with 2nd place. Four Illinois State players were later drafted by MLB teams. Alan Look Photography's ISU - MLB Draft gallery is here. The four players are Chris Razo, Chad Hinshaw, Brett Kay and Eric Aguilera.
Very recently analysts have been opening up about the upcoming NBA Draft. Not left out is Illinois State Basketball Redbirds Jackie Carmichael. Comcast Sports analysts have Jackie pegged as an early to mid 2nd round pick. Check out Alan Look Photographys gallery of Jackie Carmichael images.
Well, February is half over and Basketball is starting to get to the playoffs. Only one Illinois State Redbird home game left in the regular season. The IHSA 1a-2a girls finals are this weekend. After that, it will be March and the rest of the IHSA playoffs and the conference championships for both the men and women at ISU and IWU. IWU by the way, has nationally ranked teams again this season. Kudos to the University for support and maintaining that level of excellance!
Be sure to take a look at Best Look Magazine contributing photographer John Power's photo galleries. The last two he posted are Alma v Illinois Wesleyan and Prairie Central v Central Catholic.
